 Biblical Garden at St John's SchoolInspired by a visit to a churchyard in the Karoo, St John's matric student Sarah Horner has single-handedly created a similar 'Biblical Garden' in a patch of bare earth alongside the school chapel where she is this year's senior Sacristan.Integrating it into the school's already famous indigenous gardens maintained by Mrs Lorraine Raab, (and incorporating a sundial in memory of an Old Girl Kelly Clarke), Sarah has designed, laid out and planted her garden of meditation with a selection of flowers, plants and herbs mentioned in the Bible, providing hand-lettered relevant texts and reference - as well as conducting her own promotional and fund-raising campaign to cover expenses. Sarah hopes that each year's successive team of servers will take over responsibility of caring for the Biblical Garden, not only as a feature in the religious life of the school but even of wider interest to Maritzburg as well, as it can hardly fail to be noticed by the passing public alongside the new entrance to St John's DSG in Harwin Road.

This will include, as a non-stipendiary priest, involvement in the school's programmes of social action for boys and staff such as AIDS Hospice in Lidgetton, Sunfi eld Home in Howick and Asithithuke School near Nottingham Road, as well as seeking and developing new partnerships and programmes in underprivileged and under-resourced communities. |
