Diocesan Environment Committee: Reducing Emissions - A New Parish Handbook

The recent shock announcement that Eskom and Sasol alone are responsible for 75% of our country's highly damaging carbon emissions should be yet another sharp reminder of the vital need to significantly reduce our consumption of electricity and fuel

Since last year's contentious "load shedding" there have been frequent calls from Eskom, and municipal and environmental groups for a general reduction of at least 10% in electricity consumption. In most cases these appeals seem to have been ignored. The latest figure for a reduction of consumption in the Durban area is 3%, and this figure will no doubt decrease as winter approaches.

People of faith should be in the forefront of the fight to conserve God's creation yet it may be that we are not setting an example by our own lifestyles and by the use of resources in our parishes. The updated Parish Handbook, issued by the Diocesan Environment Committee and handed to clergy late last year, offers a helpful parish environmental audit form and also a personal audit form which could be distributed for use by parishioners. A significant time to focus on these important issues would be on the Sunday closest to World Environment Day, 5 June. Suggested prayers and Bible readings for this and other important "Creation Days" are also included in the Handbook as is much other helpful information.

Our Archbishop Thabo's words are an encouragement to clergy, parish councils and all congregations:
"Now is the time to recognize that we have a responsibility to God to care for the intricate web of life, acknowledging that 'he earth is the Lord's and all that is in it.'"(Ps 24).
